Garmin chose CES to introduce a new device that turns some of their portable Nuvi navigators into an automotive diagnostic tool and can double as a fuel saving device.

Called ecoRoute HD, the device plugs into a vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD II) port found on vehicles made since 1996, and it wirelessly transmits performance information to the PND, including engine rpm, fuel flow, and emissions.

The Nuvi PND can then display the information through a variety of customizable screens and use it to more accurately calculate efficiency for drivers using Garmin’s ecoRoutes--a feature found on newer Nuvi devices and available as a free download. EcoRoute also lets drivers choose routes based on estimated fuel consumption, in addition to fastest time or shorter distance.

EcoRoute HD can also report on problems with various drivetrain, emissions, and charging system components, and it can be used to reset trouble codes. Available in January 2010 with a suggested retail price of $149.99, ecoRoute HD is compatible with the recent Nuvi 1260, 1370, 1390, 1490, and 1690 models.
